Recently, a friend of mine started a small business. It has taken off very quickly, with a bit of help from (and money thrown to) Google. Through Sensis, my friend chose a Bronze Package, with added Google sponsorship. For this, she gets a hundred keywords, for which she will appear on the first page of results. This “ClickManager” deal costs her $2,310 per calendar month. This seems like a hell of a lot, and it is, but it is bringing in an awful lot more. Aside from that, her website, which included the domain name, cost approximately $8,000, and the hosting costs $300 a year.

Before even considering online advertising, you have to have a good webpage to direct to, and this requires some capital $$$. But once that is done, it doesn’t have to be expensive- although my friend has found that putting in a little bit more brings more rewards.

Final Project Progress

So my final project is coming along pretty well. I have completed a storyboard for the webpage, and written a lot of the code. I have started recording the audio and video for the film clip and I have written about two thirds of the rationale. Here is my storyboard Click to view slideshow.

The theme is not close to being finalised, the colours and fonts will change, but this is the basic layout.

Clay Shirky believes that innovation can happen anywhere but it is easy for us to take for granted that we’re all in it together. Up until the last few decades, media that was good at creating groups was no good at creating conversations, and vice versa.

Over the four technological periods in last 500 years… those inspired by the printing press, the telegraph/telephone, recorded media other than print (pics movies etc), and radio and television, media has interacted with people on a one to many or many to one basis. The Internet is the first at the many to many pattern. It is the carriage for all other media, all media residing next door to each other. Consumers become producers- the everyman is empowered. Shirky gave an example of this with his case study on the earthquake in China and how the locals became journalists and photographers with their work distributed worldwide in seconds.

Film Clip Creative Imagery

For some inspiration for my upcoming film clip, I have been watching back through some of my favourite films. One of these films is Chris Marker’s 1962 film “La Jetee”. Marker uses a narrative and a series of still photographs to make the film come to life. This is a very effective technique in a striking film. I plan on using this concept in my film clip as it is not only impressive, but inexpensive and easy to put together.

In order for a new law to be passed, it must be considered “enforceable”. The current copyright laws, particularly those concerning music, are most certainly not enforceable. Something needs to change, we need to catch up, get up to date.

I don’t necessarily want someone else using my music, manipulating it, and making money from it. But at the same time, I have posted all my recordings free to download, and encouraged people to pass it on to others. In regards to the artist “Girl Talk”, I agree with his actions while he continues to recognise and cite the artists that he samples. They do say that there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

There is a fine line that is easily crossed when reproducing or editing someone else’s work. Personally I believe this line is no longer a legal one, but a moral one.

“Rich Sonic Soup”

I find Martin Chappell’s obsession with carrying a sound recorder intriguing and inspiring. To be able to listen to noise and find it beautiful or “breathtaking” as the article states, is not an easy thing. Especially in the city, I find it very difficult to calm myself to a level where I can appreciate busy sound without provoking anxiety. Perhaps then, I would benefit from taking a few recordings that I can listen to later in the privacy of my own home.

I have always been interested in foley art and ambient music so I am keen to listen to some of chappell’s work.

The mention of Wong Kar-wai was fitting, as I believe the phrase “rich sonic soup” is a good way to describe his “Happy Together”. Another of my favourite soundtracks, though completely different in style, is that of “Paris, Texas”. Ry Cooder’s spacious and intense slide guitar marries the visuals so perfectly.
